Reiki is the
art and science of healing and balancing the body, mind and
spirit. Reiki is not a religion nor a creed but a simple
method of natural healing utilizing life energy.
Reiki has been
taught orally since its re-discovery in the late 1800s by Dr.
Mikao Usui, President of a Christian School in Kyoto, Japan.
The Reiki method of natural healing is mentioned in the ancient
history of Japan and Buddhist sutras (9 sacred writings) and its
origin goes back at least 2,500 years. It was abandoned
and then lost because the Zen Buddhist monks found it inadequate
as the person was still (they believed) sick of spirit after the
physical body had been healed. Today we are aware of the
need to heal the individual on all levels; physical, mental,
spiritual and emotional, to truly accomplish a holistic healing.
We are uncovering ancient methods and integrating them in a
holistic approach.
Reiki
(pronounced Ray-Key) is a Japanese word meaning "Universal Life
Energy" and it is this energy which emanates from the hands of a
Reiki therapist. Reiki cannot be taught as ordinary
knowledge but must be transmitted like light through the
meditation and touch of a Master to a student, then the
technique of using Reiki is taught in the normal fashion of
imparting knowledge. Once initialed into the first degree
(there are 3 degrees) anyone can heal by simply placing the
hands gently on the person seeking help. There is no need
to alter the state of consciousness nor go through any mental
exercises. when one places the hands on, Reiki turns on;
remove the hands, Reiki turns off. It heals the cause and
eliminates the effect.
Most methods
of spiritual or psychic healing require many years of training
and practice to develop the degree of effectiveness to make
healing a reality. With Reiki, in four sessions the
attunement with Universal Life Energy is made and the individual
can heal themselves and others. A full treatment brings
the four bodies into balance and harmony. Several
treatments may be necessary for chronic conditions.
In the class,
one learns how to treat for various ailments. The student
learns to use Reiki on themselves before using it on others.
Reiki can be used as a first aid kit as accidents respond almost
immediately. However, a full treatment requires about on
hour to an hour an a half.
Reiki does not
take any special talent. It cannot be done wrong.
The more one uses it, the stronger it becomes. The big
bonus with Reiki is that when you are treating someone else you
are also receiving a healing at the same time. One is
never tired or depleted after giving a treatment since we are
using Universal Life Energy, not our own.
Reiki is being
used by many individuals in the healing profession: physicians,
chiropractors, nurses, psychic healers, psychologists,
bio-energetists and others involved in body work; rolfing
massage, Alexander and Feldenkrias methods. It can be used
by the professional as well as the layman.
